    • This is a somewhat slow, silent story of a young boy growing up in a poor village in Bengal. It follows Apu and Durga, (two children who are poor even by the standards of their village mates), as they search for wild berries and leaves, steal mangoes from their neighbors, get beaten, play cowries, get lost, and discover trains. Their lives are simple and their stories simply told. You get a sense both of the rarified, natural beauty that village life holds, and of the ways in which it grinds peo [...]

    • Originally published in 1929 (I think), a terrific story of a life of poverty in an Indian village. I wish Mitt Romney would read this book. (Not sure it would do Paul Ryan any good to read it.)

Koesalah Soebagio [...]

    • This book started my love for Indian novels. The apu's trilogy, Aranakata Pem banda and Gora,Srikantha, Srikantha and Rajalakshmi, all books translated by Ms Sinhaarachchi were loved and read and re read until they got rabbit eared. I was just a teen, eager to get lost in a world, and forget that I was seated in a corner of the school library, unseen by anyone. The story takes you to world of a bygone era, where Apu and his sister love each other with the same love-hate passion that is common for [...]

    • I wish I could read Bengali !!. This is the Indian equivalent of Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird. But this novel contented with children's world without much major social or political chaos. Another important thing, there is no solid story or proper handling of time. The novel is about the rural domestic Bengali village life correlating a boy's childhood with his family in a very simple language. Author's command over children's psychology is outstanding. I hope for another better English tra [...]

[ Bibhutibhushan's this book, I will tell only Excellent. When I read in Class twelve. I read in this book. ]

    • From BBC Radio 4 - Classical Serial:Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay's classic of Bengali literature, dramatised by Tanika Gupta

    • Always difficult to review a classic which has been feted and dissected. Merit & technicalities take a backseat. At the most one can take an opposing stance and defend why they did NOT like the book. This book in its rural and impoverished setting is far removed from my childhood - and yet did not alienate at any stage. A huge chunk of Apu's childhood echoed within me. The emotional coherence of the story persisted inspite of (seemingly) disjointed scenes. As with all great literature, if a re [...]

    • "I wish I could read this in Bengali" This was the most prevalent thought after completing this book, the emotional connect of the book is so damn high that it left me in tears at many points. The story revolves around Durga and Apu, how they grew up in poverty. Relationship of Apu and Durga always giggled me but death of Old Aunty and Durga left me in despair. This book has been on of the few books of an Indian author that I have liked. I am looking forward to reading other two books in the sub [...]

    • A very touching story of the lives of ordinary Indians under excruciating poverty in the pre-independence Bengal. In a very simple, yet powerful language, the author has woven an intricate web of human emotions, expressed through the eyes of two beautiful young children. The description of the life of Bengal in those days is near flawless. It is often said that poverty cannot be explained - it has to be experienced, and this book stands tall as a testimony to it.

    • i loved every details of this book. bibhutibhushan will get a nobel in heaven for this and i'll make a prize and take it with me to heaven just to give it to him, then God can throw me in hell, i won't mind that.

    • Bagus banget Ini tentang realita hidup. masih banyak orang0orang di luar sana yang kurang beruntung. sangat menggugah. nangis aku dibuatnya, hiks

    • Reviewing a classic book like this one is beyond me so am just going to give it 5 stars that it rightly deserves :)
